Flower of the Day: Delphinium

The world is bonkers these days. The late summer heat is heavy and has settled in hard. And the new norm is smoke filled skies, at least 3 people you know on pre-evac, and a daily, solid headache from all of the above. So today I come to you with a big ask… may I distract you with some flower lore? Please? I’d just like to share a little of our daily beauty and get your mind in a good place. If that’s ok.

I mean dang y’all, have you SEEN delphinium?? I really hadn’t before we started growing them last year. They are unique to say the least. They can be tall… the majority that we grow are five feet and up! They have a long stalk lined with flowers that look like they were painted by Matisse or Monet. They may be double petals- the softest white just kissed by lavender or may be single, large flowers that are completely magical blue and purple and each bloom looks like actual fairy wings. I had to know (word nerd) and looked up the etymology of delphinium and found out they earned the name from the Greek “delphin” or “dolphin” in English as it was thought that the individual flowers resembled the bodies of dolphins. I can see it. If I squint a little. Regardless of what you think they look like it’s easy to see why people bring them as remembrance and also use them to celebrate with joy and fun. These beauties are associated with protection, strong bonds, and a big heart. They were even thought to ward off evil spirits and negative energies. They are next level wonder little (big) fairy queens- with one caveat- they are toxic. No judgment here. We all have something going on- amiright??? But delphinium and their smaller, wilder cousins Larkspur are poisonous- especially when consumed. Ranchers can confirm- cows and other livestock should not consume them. And to be honest we should probably wash our hands after harvesting. But we don’t :) and Chan and I are still absolutely thriving! In short, they don’t have many uses other than an excellent base for home made inks and dyes- also making your days magical and extra special. It’s a pleasure to stand beside them daily, or rather under them if you’re a shorty like me.

We would love to introduce them into your daily. We are excited to include them in any order we get. And don’t forget we will deliver a big, beautiful mason jar filled with homegrown loveliness to make your life extra special in these tough times. Let us know what you would like and we’ll see you soon. Thanks for spending a little time adding some fun facts to your day. We love having you be part of our flower family!
